Clinical Supervision
but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.” – Steven Spielberg
Philosophy
I believe that all persons are capable of living through their best self by discovering their personal narrative which incorporates the meaning and purpose for their lives. Working from an existential-humanistic integrative framework, there are necessary considerations of individual experiences, cultural-societal and family systems, and the impact of events that have led our clients to seek counseling. Presence in the therapeutic relationship is of primary importance, as it invites people to feel safe and held, no matter the difficulty or trauma they enter with into the therapy space. Through approaches involving integrative talk counseling like CBT, DBT, ACT, and IFS, as well as creative interventions with mindfulness, music, art, sand tray, writing, and somatic movement, we are able to look at a person’s life circumstances through various lenses offering the option for many paths to a more integrated future.
It is my belief that our own personal search for meaning and authenticity as a therapist in the world is required to support our clients. We can only help others to the extent that we have helped ourselves and understood our own journey. The role of a therapist is one that continuously requires this personal depth work as well as an understanding of psychology theory, psychotherapeutic techniques and philosophy from those who have come before us.
Lastly, knowledge in the medical model systems including assessment and diagnosis, medication, treatment planning and documentation is important for practice as a therapist. I believe that a well rounded therapist is skilled in the needs and requirements of our systems that support people in our society.
Supervision Style
As a supervisor, I come from a learning orientation that is present and reflective, devoting time and energy to develop the skills needed to become a counselor. Together, we can take time to learn what strategies are most beneficial for you achieving your goals. Viewing mistakes or setbacks on the way as opportunities for learning and further development is essential to the supervisory relationship and your development as a counselor. I hope to create an atmosphere of excitement about your choice to embark upon a profession that demands continuous growth yet provides continuous rewards. By the end of supervision, my goal is for you to feel confident and capable out in the profession, practicing with clarity and ease.
